Optimization
Techniques Utilized on WITHseo.com
As described below, a number of standard
search engine optimization techniques were
used in an attempt to improve the search
engine performance of the WITHseo.com home
page.
Keyword Research - The
goal is to find keyword phrases that are
related to your business and that your potential
customers actually use in Google, Yahoo!
or other Internet search engines.
| The following tools and concepts were
considered in the course of developing
keyphrases for WITHseo.com: |
|
|
- Note, however, that keyword popularity
alone is not enough! We scrubbed
our list of phrases carefully to
ensure each phrase is BOTH popular
and relevant to our goals. We want
phrases that generate a reasonable
volume of qualified leads.
|
After much analysis, it was determined
that "Search Engine Optimization Tips"
and "SEO Tips" were relevant and
popular Internet searches.
Keyword Placement - Although
experts disagree about the relative importance
of the many locations where you might embed
your keywords, there are a number of recommended
locations where keywords should appear.
| Our keyphrases were embedded and incorporated
in several key locations: |
- Heading Tag Content (i.e H1,
H2)
|
|
|
|
|
Keyword Density - Your
keywords should appear in the body or content
areas of your Web page but in an acceptable
frequency - experts speculate that the optimal
keyword frequency range is between 4% to
9%.
| Using the IBP Keyword Density Analyzer,
the WITHseo home page is analyzed against
competitive sites and modified based
on the following criterial: |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
| The document title for the WITHseo.com
home page is <TITLE>Search
Engine Optimization Tips -
WITHseo.com SEO Case Study Description</TITLE>
(bold added for emphasis). Note that
our key phrase "Search Engine Optimization
Tips" is a part of the page title. |
| |
| The WITHseo.com home page has the
following keywords Meta tag: |
<meta name="keywords"
content="search engine
optimization tips,seo tips,search
engine optimization,seo,web site optimization,denver,colorado,ebiz,ebiz
machine,case study,seo study,seo case
study">
|
| The bold text (bold added for emphasis)
is the key phrase for which the home
page is optimized. |
| |
| Our keyphrase occurs in the body text,
but not at an excessive frequency. We
shoot for inclusion of our keywords in a visible manner. The
sentence "WITH SEO is a Search Engine Optimization
Tips Web Site Brought to you by Web
Design & Internet Consultant EBIZ
Machine" is the first sentence indexed by Google. Last we checked, the keyword
density for search engine optimization
tips was just under 2%. |
| |
| The home page contains two headings: |
| <h1> Search Engine Optimization
Tips - SEO Techniques</h1> |
| <h2>Denver Colorado web design
and Internet consulting company EBIZ
Machine has designed a case study to
educate businesses about techniques
used to improve the usability and relevance
of their websites and ensure that their
products and services are visible to
the online community.</h2> |
| |
| As an example of a text link that
references the key phrase, the home
page contains the following link: |
| We
will do our best to frequently publish
results of this search engine
optimization tips case study.
Click here to view the results drawn
from this case study thus far. |
| Again the key phrase is embedded in
the link. |
| |
| In the case of the image "alt"
we could have assigned text to the alt
attribute: |
| <img src="images/is_optimized.gif"
border="0" alt="ADD
TEXT HERE"> |
| However, because in this case there
are so few images on the home page,
the alt tag was not assigned to keep
the keyword density in the alt tags
low. |
Link Building - The goal
behind link building is to develop “inbound”
links to your web pages in order to drive
traffic to your site and improve your search
engine ranking. To the extent possible for
a demo site like this one, attempts will
be made to develop a reasonable number of
inbound links to WITHseo.com given our time
constraints.
It is believed that links from “authoritative”
websites and “related” industry
sites carry the most weight. An “authoritative”
site might be an educational organization
(.edu), a publication, a government agency
(.gov), a known subject matter expert or
an organization/association in yours or
a related industry.
As for “related” sites, partners,
vendors, but not competitors are good “reciprocal
linking”. Their sites should be related
to the products and/or services provided.
Analyze the inbound links to the page where
you would like to see your link. Are they
in fact authoritative and relevant sites?
How do you research inbound links to your
potential linking partner? Netconcepts provides
a free “Link Popularity Checker”
at http://www.netconcepts.com/linkcheck/.
Another site is LinkPopularity.com - http://www.linkpopularity.com/.
We used these tools to assess the quality
of the links to the page before attempting
to obtain a link! While you’re there,
check out the link popularity of your web
pages and those of your competitors.
Note that many SEO experts believe that
you should stay away from a web page that
already has too many links.
Once you have targeted an inbound link
opportunity, you will want to suggest the
link location and the exact link language
you wish to appear on their site. Embed
your keyphrases into the link text. Make
sure the page the link points to (the “Target
Page”) is “optimized”
for those keyphrases.
It's clear that link building is a very
time consuming process. Our goal is to add
a few relevant links every so often so as
to be consistent with natural growth. We'll
create an article that discusses this project
and outlines the results of this study.
We'll look for online publishing opportunities
and relevant newsletters willing to share
this information.
Sitemaps - Google (What
is a Sitemap file and why should I have
one?) and Yahoo (Yahoo
Site Map Instructions) offer a manner
by which you can provide information about
the web pages that make up your site AND
expedite the indexing process. Here's a
handy tool you can use to create a Google
sitemap http://www.sitemapspal.com/.
In the case of WITHseo.com, we have followed
the validation and sitemap submission steps
described in the Google and Yahoo articles
referenced above.
The sitemap for withseo.com was created and submitted to Google on April 23rd, 2007. A sitemap was not submitted for withoutseo.com.
Site Architecture - Although
hotly debated, it appears that the use of
certain development technologies may impede
proper indexing of website pages. Examples
cited include HTML frames, Macromedia Flash
animation, complicated internal links and Javascript. To the extent
possible, we will avoid the use of these
technologies in the WITHseo.com design.
This is a "static" HTML website
- no Flash, frames, or database access.
JavaScript is kept to a minimum and internal
page links consistent of simple directory
paths.
About the WITHOUTseo.com Design
- WITHOUTseo.com has been
designed using development techniques thought
to impede website usability and its success
in search engine performance. WITHOUTseo.com
utilizes JavaScript navigation and frames.
Its "Meta Tags" including keywords
and page descriptions are left undefined.
No attempt has been made to optimize the
WITHOUTseo.com web page content or embed
keyphrases in site links and URLs.
